Veronica Lake was born in New York City. She was one of three sisters, all of whom became actresses. Their mother died when Lake was very young, and her father remarried. At age 15 she left school to pursue a career as an actress, and her first film role was in Gunga Din (1939)
She eventually became one of the busiest and most popular actresses of the 1940s, starring in such films as The Blue Veil (1951) and Kiss Me Deadly (1955), and appearing in many others. Her most famous film role was that of the harlot-siren in the 1944 classic noir classic Sunset Boulevard. She died in Lake Tahoe, California, at age 53.
